The Golden Age, according to many the most glorious period in Dutch history, also evokes resistance today. Some therefore advocate abolishing the term. The recently published book Elke provincie een eigen Gouden Eeuw  by Louis Sicking (ed.) aims to break open the debate focused on the province of Holland by giving the designation ‘Golden Age’, with its downsides, to all provinces of the Netherlands. Twelve authors, including Dr Han Nijdam and Dr Alex Kerkhof of the Fryske Akademy, each examine a province and focus on an aspect of its history whose importance transcends its own region.

Dr Han Nijdam's contribution to this book is entitled 'De Gouden Eeuw van het Friese koninkrijk (7de - 8ste eeuw)' ('The Golden Age of the Frisian Kingdom (7th-8th century)').
Dr Alex Kerkhof wrote a chapter on Limburg, 'De Gouden Eeuw van het Nederlands (12de-13de eeuw)' (‘The Golden Age of Dutch (12th-13th century)’)
 

‘Best new books’

Elke provincie een eigen Gouden Eeuw is published by Prometheus Publishers and has so far enjoyed a good reception. At NRC, the book was even in the list of ‘best new books’ for several weeks.
